Lendlease and Surbana Jurong partner on digital platform Podium for Development

Lendlease is partnering with Surbana Jurong to create a platform that promises to provide solutions for the built environment, aptly named Podium for Development (P4D). This digital ecosystem is designed to connect developers, designers, and the supply chain, ensuring high construction productivity and promoting sustainable building practices.

A 2015 KPMG report found that inadequate communication and collaboration between stakeholders resulted in a staggering 38% of construction disputes. Furthermore, only 31% of projects were able to stay within 10% of their proposed budgets. A 2017 report by the McKinsey Global Institute concluded that the construction industry’s annual productivity had only grown by 1% in the past 20 years, however it was responsible for 40% of greenhouse gas emissions.

With these issues in mind, P4D seeks to counter them by providing a platform which works to streamline and improve decision-making for property developers. It is useful for generating building designs that factor in building specifications, estimated costs, kit-of-parts, and other aspects. It is estimated that up to 70% of the building design process can be automated with this tool.

Richard Kuppusamy, chief product officer for Podium, explains that it can generate a structural design in 15-20 minutes, instead of the months that it would take using current methods. This means that human designers can instead be focusing on more complex and subjective aspects of architecture.

Lendlease is looking to capitalize on this exciting new development by working with Surbana Jurong to deliver P4D. Negotiations are underway to include other developers and building authorities in Singapore and beyond. Bill Ruh, CEO of Lendlease digital, believes it has the potential to revolutionize a sector that is in dire need of reinvention. He hopes it will inspire others to replicate best sustainable building practices and benefit communities all over the world.

It also enables collaboration between multiple project stakeholders during the design stage.

Lendlease is committed to finding viable and meaningful solutions to promote sustainability through developments such as P4D. Its new protocol seeks to further address scope 3 emissions.
