Lendlease launches new protocol addressing Scope 3 emissions 0
Lumina Grand EC offers a wide range of amenities, such as tennis courts, swimming pools, and a clubhouse, for its future residents to enjoy in their leisure time. The close proximity of Lumina Grand Bukit Batok to various schools, parks and retail spaces also mean that its residents will never be short of entertainment options.
At Climate Week NYC, Lendlease has launched a new protocol to accelerate the pace and scale of decarbonisation within the real estate sector. The built environment is responsible for around 40% of global carbon emissions, and Scope 3 emissions make up the majority of Lendlease’s carbon footprint globally.
Scope 3 emissions refer to the indirect emissions from activities in the company’s value chain, such as the manufacturing of building materials, or emitters from travel or tenant power consumption. In comparison, Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from company-controlled resources, and Scope 2 emissions are emissions generated from energy purchased from a provider.
The challenge in addressing Scope 3 emissions is that there is a lack of guidance on reporting boundaries. To tackle this, Lendlease has developed the protocol to clearly define which emissions should be tracked, measured and reported.
Cate Harris, Group Head of Sustainability and Lendlease Foundation, explains that the protocol helps to determine what is material and in-scope. For example, building materials purchased directly or through subcontractors should be measured at the product stage.
Harris further remarks that the protocol hopes to encourage discussion among other real estate companies on how to account for and report on Scope 3 emissions. She believes that if this is successful, collaboration between industry players can help to eliminate Scope 3 emissions.
To achieve net-zero carbon for Scope 1 and 2 emissions in Asia by 2025, and absolute zero – which includes eliminating Scope 3 emissions – by 2040, Lendlease is taking big steps towards decarbonisation; steps which the new protocol takes into consideration.
Ultimately, the protocol provides a framework for other firms to follow, in order to decarbonise the environment and reduce the impact of carbon emissions.
